Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Rebecca!
Hi Rebecca, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m Rebecca and am 26 years old, originally from Lawrence, Kansas. I have 3 siblings – one older brother and two younger sisters. I moved to LA a little over a year ago. I currently live in El Sereno. I work as a holistic pain relief therapist and California native plant gardener. In addition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I enjoy rock climbing, hot yoga, meditation, and acro yoga.
What classes do you take and what got you interested?
I take Fundamentals and All Levels BJJ the most consistently. I also take No-Gi and Muay Thai occasionally. Initially, I joined for Muay Thai for exercise and self-defense then got into BJJ and now I am working towards winning a large competition by the end of this year.
How long have you been training and what is your current belt rank?
I have been training for over a year now and I am a 2 stripe white belt.
What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?
My favorite part of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is the sparring part.
Do you have a favorite Jiu-Jitsu technique?
My favorite Jiu-Jitsu technique is the triangle choke submission.
You occasionally train Muay Thai Kickboxing as well. What aspects do you like about it?
Muay Thai Kickboxing is a serious cardio workout and great arms and core workout overall. It is also fun to learn punch and kick combinations.
You also assist the kids BJJ classes 4x a week, how do you like it and does it help you in your own BJJ training?
I love assisting the kid’s classes! It makes me happy to see the kids having fun learning a useful life skill and to see their progress. My own training has also improved immensely from working with the kids. Many of the fundamental techniques I remember and also use the most when sparring are in fact the techniques we teach to the kids.
What current and future goals do you have?
My current goal is to continue building my experience doing soft-tissue bodywork. My future goal is to open a clinic that specializes in preventing and treating Jiu-Jitsu injuries and other sport-related injuries.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?
Just a big thank you for everything Professor Gino and Anna. I’m so grateful for you both and this BJJ community!
