Silanoe Martial Arts Student of the Month
Muay Thai Kickboxing Student of the Month Tina Austin with her daughter in scrubs

At Silanoe Martial Arts, we appreciate our students. They truly shape us. Every student is special to us and because of that we would like to dedicate this monthly section to them. The student of the month of August is Tina Austin! Tina has been with us since we opened in February and she has been very consistent in her training.  Not only is she great to have in our classes because of her skill level and knowledge of Muay Thai, but she is also willing to help out new students on perfecting their techniques as well.  Whatever she does, she always has a smile on her face and we are so happy to have her as a part of the Silanoe Martial Arts family!

Hi Tina, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi my name is Tina Austin and I am a Muay Thai fighter, a labor and delivery nurse for over 20 years and a mother. My son is 24 years old, my daughter is 21 years old.
I have three cats. I feel like animals are very therapeutic just like Muay Thai has been to me.

What got you interested in Muay Thai and when did you start training?

What got me interested in Muay Thai was that I could no longer compete in gymnastics, so I found a new endeavor. It took a lot of practice and endurance and perseverance for over 10 years. I recently retired Muay Thai competition advised by my coach.

How often do you like to train?

Right now I train Muay Thai twice a week. Other than that, I swim three times a week and jog/walk once a week. I am trying to increase my workouts because I am in a fitness challenge.

What do you think about Dutch Kickboxing compared to Muay Thai?

Differences between standard Muay Thai and Dutch Kickboxing is basically the stance and angles. It’s a good work out and I don’t mind the changes or differences.

What tip would you offer someone who is just starting out?

My advice for those that are just starting out Muay Thai or at Silanoe Martial Arts is to stick with it. Allow it to change your life, and it will change your life in a positive way. You will meet new people that hat you put in and the dedication.

Do you have any tips/advice or anything else you would like to share with us?

I am involved in the martial arts promotions IFS and MTA. I like being around the fighters because I was a fighter and I know that they need somebody with my energy around them before and after the fights. For all my Tigress fans out there, thank you for your support. You have seen me through a lot of sweat pain and tears but it was all worth it. It continues to be worth it. I will continue to be in the martial arts industry for more time to come.
