Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Jorge Gomez!
Hi Jorge, can you please tell a little bit about yourself?
I am Jorge Gomez, I currently live in Alhambra but grew up in San Francisco, CA.
I work as a technician assembling robotic arms and mechanisms for space and military applications. I would say that movement, in general, is fascinating, like anything physical. Tumbling, Capoeira, Boxing, Soccer, Football, etc. I like classic American muscle cars. Like all kinds of music and I like to travel as well. I am married with two brothers (one older and one younger) and a whole hell of a lot of cousins in the Bay Area and in Mexico.
What classes do you take and what got you interested?
I generally take the Gi classes when I can get in but the occasional NoGi class too. What got me interested in Jiujitsu was the thought of being a well-rounded Capoeirista back in 1998. The thought was to be skilled with hands (boxing), kicks (Capoeira), and the last element was to have a ground game (Jiujitsu). I tried it for 2 weeks in San Francisco with Kurt Osiander and I was hooked. Unfortunately, life took over and was unable to actually train until 2009. That’s when I started and haven’t been able to shake the fascination since.
How long have you been training and what is your current belt rank?
I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2008 In 2010 I received the Blue belt. From 2010 until 2013 I went back to school so training was unfortunately very limited. My purple belt I received back in 2013.
What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?
When I finally grasp a concept and it becomes a part of my live rolls.
Do you have a favorite Jiu-Jitsu technique?
I like the Knee shield, the butterfly sweep, the little chair sweep and the knee slide pass in particular.
What current and future goals do you have?
Regain enough strength in my shoulder to be able to give training partners an intense roll again.
Learn to defend yourself not only on your feet but also on the ground.
Jorge is fascinated with movement. He wanted to be skilled and able to defend himself in a complete fashion, so he learned to strike and added a martial arts training on the ground to his repertoire. We offer Muay Thai Kickboxing so you can be proficient in striking and we teach you the art of Jiu-Jitsu that will help you understand how to defend yourself on the ground. If you would like to try out without any cost request a Free Week Trial. If you would like to read more about different Silanoe Martial Arts adult students such as Ivan click here.
